Topol achieved his first major international recognition starring in the Israeli film Sallah Shabati. His comedic portrayal of a new immigrant to Israel earned him a Golden Globe Award for Most Promising Newcomer and the film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
Topol made his English-language stage debut as Tevye the milkman in the London production of Fiddler on the Roof. This marked the beginning of his legendary association with the role, which he would perform thousands of times over five decades.
Topol became a global star for his iconic portrayal of Tevye in the film adaptation of Fiddler on the Roof. His powerful and moving performance earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor and a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.
